Route of the upper district of Lauria, called “castle”, winds along narrow streets and steps in a continuous ups and downs that characterize the so-called “sartine” in popular parlance, or small streets along which are scattered the various places of interest. The route includes as a starting point the Capuchin monastery of St. Anthony, still inhabited today by the order, an important point of reference for the Lauriot Christian community and which preserves artistic elements of considerable interest. Going uphill along an ancient steep road, characterized by the application of ceramic slabs that tell the via crucis, wanted by friars themselves, we enter the village centre where we reach the mother church of Nicola di Bari, which acquires further value as it enshrines also the remains of Blessed Domenico Lentini, to whom the whole community is particularly devoted. Going down Via Roma, you encounter the small church of S. Biagio, while going up to the Caffaro district, one of the most characteristic and ancient of the town, you will first come across the Lentini’s house, home of the beloved priest, modernized in recent times, which has become a treasure chest of all Lentini’s personal effects and objects exhibited together with all the small gifts that the believers bring, as it’s also a place open to prayer and meditation. Then you enter the heart of the district, where you encounter the chapel of S. Veneranda and of San Pasquale. At the end you reach the sanctuary of the Madonna Assunta, on top of a terrace that hosts a panoramic viewpoint with a wide view over the whole valley, up to the Sirino mountain range, the Coccovello and the Serra Rotonda, and also the entire upper district on where the ruins of the Ruggero Castle stand out.
